Lonely farms mean barking dogs.

 

Highlands have made Le Chambon a vacation site since the 1920's and the presence of family inns helps explain how sheltering so many refugees was possible.

 

Visitors have come for almost a century, usually from nearby. There is no exploitation of the heroism of the past – inhabitants do not talk about it.

  • Hotels where the Huguenot spirit dwells

 

 

 

 

Two pensions de famille (family-style inns) that harbored refugees during the war are now small and spartan hotels that Protestants run. We have stayed in both and recommend them for the Huguenot spirit they reveal.

 

The mood is austere – but the cooking is excellent.

 

A luxurious hotel is open during the summer months as well.
