A father's portrait

Her great-great-grand-grandfather was Alexander Swoboda, a Hungarian Orientalist painter who in the 1860's travelled throughout the Ottoman Empire with his daughter.

Their voyage led her to write a dramatic historical novel – "I made up the story," she says, "and then I learned that much of what I said was true."

This great-grandmother became a painter herself.

Our hostess's novel. (The insurance company lets us give her name privately.)

Her grand-daughter is a young opera singer whose career is beginning well. A concert in the family salon can conclude the event – as a portrait of the novel's heroine looks on.

The salon can seat 100 participants.
