Americans with strong links to France have influenced both cultures. Our suggestions concern these examples:
•The U.S. Constitution stems directly from the writings of the French philosophes while French support for the American insurgents hastened their own Revolution. The 19th-century American community in Paris reinforced ties and created a sense of closeness.
•American painters who lived in France greatly influenced art at home, while U.S. purchases of Impressionist and subsequent experimental works stimulated French creativity.
•U.S. volunteers as well as troops helped France during and after World War 1 and the American role in the Liberation is remembered with emotion.
•Black American musicians found a haven in France and the Parisian intelligentsia established jazz as a major contribution to music.
•American artists in all domains have lived in Paris, contributing to its effervescence and to compatriots' vision of the city as legendary.
