Delacroix in church and at home – man-in-the-street noblessse

Visits and walk in Saint-Germain-des-Prés
"Liberty leading the people", 1831, Louvre

You may not remember the name of the great Romantic painter (Eugène Delacroix, 1798-1863), but you surely recognize this painting.

  • His last works are hidden away in the church of Saint-Sulpice

Saint-Sulpice would be a major attraction in most cities...

The Da Vinci Code excepted, Paris's most important 18th-century edifice attracts little attention.

Yet it is both a major work of architecture and the setting for impressive art, including Delacroix's chapel.

"Jacob's struggle with the angel"

Hemingway would meditate there on The struggle of Jacob with the angel. Both artists were inspired by violence and grandeur...

Delacroix's garden

Streets little-changed since the master's time take us to the studio, now an intimate museum. Discussion can continue in a walled garden that seems remote from Paris.
