Vitality on the other side of the tracks

Low-rent hinterlands and the arts

Paris pushes out from the center in a series of rings, which explains why many of the celebrated sites are within walking distance of one another. That, however, is the museum-like city, often lovely, but not necessarily creative.

For a different atmosphere, go to often sordid periphery. Relatively inexpensive land explains cemeteries with fabulous funerary art, the Pasteur Institute, bustling flea markets. And for vitality, remember that artists seek affordable rents. That explains their presence there, and a creation that can be superbe.
