  • Philip, the Sun King's brother...

 

 

Louis is on the right, Philip on the left, in this painting of the royal family (1665).

 

...whom History made the natural (though involuntary) leader of nobles' revolt.
 

 

His descendants were usually intelligent and competent, which encouraged the senior branch to keep them at arms' length...

Execution of Louis XVI (January 21, 1793)

During the Revolution the "radical chic" family leader turned his Palais-Royal gardens into the place from which the ideas of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity radiated out. Later, trembling with fear for his own life, he voted for the execution of his cousin, Louis XVI... .

That is all the more reason to tell some of their stories. We show photos of these engravings of  his children, who are ancestors to most of modern Europe's royals. The restaurant that harbored them is now closed...  "And so passes the glory of the world".
